During April and May 2009 I stayed on a residency granted by OCA at Platform China in Beijing where I conducted 7 interviews with Chinese artists and intellectuals. They were asked about memories of the geography of their birthplaces and recollections of political events such as World War II, The Cultural Revolution and The Tiananmen revolt. My interviewees were Chen Shaoxiong, artist, Sui Jian Guo, artist and professor (the photo is from his studio), Xiao Ke, choreographer and dancer, Jin Lianying, teacher of philosophy in the Beijing Fine Art Academy, Mu Chen, artist, Bao Pao, artist and architect, Zhuang Hui, artist. They were all born in different parts of China at different times. Each of these meetings was very inspiring and enlightening and provided a vivid impression of Chinese landscape and perspectives on history. I am preparing an installation built on my reconstruction of the stories told to me. The project departs from an interest in the spatial organization of memories and how we picture the world. The work will consist of text painted on 4 walls. It will be shown at Shandi Road 1 in Bangalore, India in 2011. |
